REGISTRATION LEVELS AND PROCEDURES
The Illustrated Reader is shareware, a method of software
marketing that lets you try programs before you buy them. Upon
receipt of this software, you have an evaluation license good for
30 days to see if you want to keep it. If you decide to keep it,
please pay for it by "registering" your copy. You can register the
at three levels: User ($25), Author ($50) and Developer ($75).
Your registration level depends on how you intend to use the program.
Each level will be described below, along with a general explanation of
shareware for those who might not be familiar with this term. A ready-
to-print registration form is also included in this document. Press
the END key to go directly to this form.
The User Level ($25)
At this level, the IR is licensed to you for your own personal
use. You may use it to read files and you may create your own
illustrated documents, as long as you do not sell them for profit.
For example, a teacher could use the IR to create lessons students
would use in his/her classroom. The User license also allows you or
your non-profit organization to distribute up to 50 copies on a not-
for-profit basis (such as the teacher example above). In addition,
User-level registrants receive:
■ shareware copies of the Neopaint paint program and Boxer text
editor ($2 shipping charge).
■ a small collection of clip art to get you started.
■ an extended text-line-to-screen-line conversion chart
■ an EGA screen pixel chart (for locating illustrations)
■ a 20% discount on any other Tea Time Product (like the
popular typing game, TYPE TREK.)
The Author Level ($50)
If you would like to create illustrated books, manuals or other
documents and intend to market these products through shareware or
other outlets, then you really need a version of the IR that is some-
what customized so with your own introductory and closing screens,
and has a "table of contents" screen for your users to select topic
names as opposed to DOS filenames. You should register at either
the Author or Developer level. Author-level registrants receive:
■ all the benefits of the User level, plus...
■ a proprietary version of the IR that accommodates authors'
introductory and closing screens, and incorporates their names
or logos into the control panel. This level license entitles
authors to sell up to 300 copies of their product without any
royalties. Any sales over 300 require a royalty of 25 cents
per copy to Tea Time Software.
■ an extensive collection of clip art (full disk).
■ a handbook of tips and tricks for even easier authoring.
The Developer Level ($75)
If you're really serious about developing and selling electronic
documents, or if you want to insure the security of your writings,
then you should register at the Developer level. Registered Developers
receive:
■ all the benefits of the Author level, plus...
■ a license that entitles you to distribute unlimited copies
of your product without additional payment or royalties to
Tea Time Software.
■ encryption utilities that encrypt your text files, plus a
version of the IR that will read these encrypted files.
(This effectively prevents someone copying and reselling your
document under another name.)
All registered users are also sent a license agreement that spells
out details of the levels for which they are registering.
What is Shareware?
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a shareware program and continue using
it, you are expected to register. Copyright laws apply to both
shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains
all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Share-
ware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases,
there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the
method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to
copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
before a commercial disk vendor may copy their shareware.
Disclaimer
Users of The Illustrated Reader must accept this disclaimer:
"The Illustrated Reader is supplied as is. The author disclaims
all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or consequential,
which may result from the use of The Illustrated Reader."
License Agreement
The Illustrated Reader is a "shareware program" and is
provided at no charge to the user for evaluation. Feel free
to share it with your friends, but please do not give it away
altered or as part of another system. The essence of "user-
supported" software is to provide personal computer users with
quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products.
If you find this program useful and find that you are using The
Illustrated Reader and continue to use it after a reasonable trial
period, you must make a registration payment to Tea Time Software.
The registration fee licenses a number of copies depending on your
registration level. (See the User, Author and Developer descriptions
in the above paragraphs.)
Anyone distributing The Illustrated Reader for any kind of
remuneration must first contact Tea Time Software at the address
below for authorization. Authorization is automatically granted to
distributors recognized by the Association of Shareware Professionals
as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such
distributors may begin offering The Illustrated Reader immediately.
(However, Tea Time Software must still be advised so that the dis-
tributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest version.)
ASP Ombudsman Statement
This program is produced by a member of the Association of
Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the
shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member
directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you re-
solve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide
technical support for members' products. Please write to the ASP
Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe
message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.
